Battleship Potemkin (Бронено́сец Потёмкин) is the famous 1925 Soviet silent film directed by Sergei Eisenstein. It presents a dramatized version of the mutiny that occurred in 1905 when the crew of the Russian battleship Potemkin rebelled against its officers. It took few months of my time in the evening, but I love the result. The old Russian songs, life sounds of sea life and new subtitles makes watching this movie even more fun!

La maison ensorcelée or the Haunted house is a 1908 French short film directed by Segundo de Chomón. The film features stop-motion animation and is considered to be one of the earliest cinematic depictions of a haunted house premise. The edited version is including sound, music and titles to make it more accessible. Two men and a woman stop at a small house in the woods. Inside, they experience numerous instances of paranormal activity, including disappearing furniture; a stereotypical ghost and movement of cutlery and food on their own; ball lightning.

Laborer’s Love is the earliest complete film from China’s early cinematic history that is available today. The film is a classic silent comedy short film produced in China during the Republican Era, which officially premiered on October 5, 1922 at the Olympic Theater in Shanghai. It is also known as Romance of a Fruit Peddler or Romance of a Fruit Pedlar.

The Great Train Robbery is a 1903 American silent Western film made by Edwin S. Porter for the Edison Manufacturing Company. It follows a gang of outlaws who hold up and rob a steam locomotive at a station in the American West, flee across mountainous terrain, and are finally defeated by a posse of locals.

Gertie the Dinosaur is a 1914 animated short film by American cartoonist and animator Winsor McCay. Sound and subtitles were added by Fred Lafeber in 2021. It is the earliest animated film to feature a dinosaur. McCay first used the film before live audiences as an interactive part of his vaudeville act; the frisky, childlike Gertie did tricks at the command of her master.

Raja Harishchandra is a 1913 Indian silent film, directed and produced by Dadasaheb Phalke, and is the first full-length Indian feature film. The film was based on the legend of Raja Harishchandra, recounted in the Ramayana and Mahabharata. The film marked a historic benchmark in the film industry in India.

Dr. Wise on Influenza” is a fascinating public-information film on the 1918-1920 influenza pandemic which is still largely relevant today. He says that those sick like Mr. Brown should stay home and away from others. Other familiar advices are isolating the sick and general social distancing. There are also warnings against crowding into ill-ventilated places and a demonstration on mask wearing, including a nurse making her own personal protection equipment. He says it’s important to keep fit, too.

Verdens Undergang is a 1916 Danish science fiction drama film directed by August Blom and written by Otto Rung, starring Olaf Fønss and Ebba Thomsen. The film depicts a worldwide catastrophe when an errant comet passes by Earth and causes natural disasters and social unrest. It is one of the first or even the first disaster film. Blom and his crew created special effects for the comet disaster using showers of fiery sparks and shrouds of smoke. The film attracted a huge audience because of fears generated during the passing of Halley’s comet six years earlier.

and finally the oldest remaining Dutch movie. The film got popular because the main actor was running without trousers on the beach (although wearing a bathing suit) but naked legs were forbidden at the time. The whole story ended up in the local police station and the national press. And of course after that everybody wanted to see the sexy legs.
